Hooray for the 100th Day!

We had a great time celebrating the 100th day of school! We counted the days by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's and even 20's. We shared collections of 100 things. We made Fruit Loop chains of 100 pieces and crazy 100th day hats with 100 stickers on them. We wrote 100 words (working together) and counted 100 steps. We read books about the 100th day and talked about how far we've come since we counted the first day.

But we don't celebrate the 100th day of school just because it's a fun thing to do. We celebrate it because it sparks discussion and learning about place value and how it all works. Celebrating it provides opportunities for our kids to observe the inherent patterns in math and to develop a deeper understanding of the concept of number. The 100th day is also a great time to celebrate how much they've grown, matured, and learned since we began on Day One.

Hooray for the 100th Day!
